Les Etats-Unis accordent 2,2 millions de dollars pour éradiquer la poliomyélite à Madagascar
Antananarivo, Madagascar: Le gouvernement des Etats-Unis à travers l’Agence Américaine pour le Développement International (USAID) accordera la somme de 2,2 millions de dollars pour appuyer les efforts déployés par le gouvernement malagasy en vue d’éradiquer la poliomyélite dans le pays. Plus de 4,3 millions enfants malagasy de moins de cinq ans bénéficieront directement de cette aide.
A Madagascar, le dernier cas de poliovirus sauvage remonte à 1997. Depuis, un petit nombre de cas de poliovirus dérivés d’une souche vaccinale sont apparus dans différents endroits du pays. Des enfants non vaccinés restent exposés à l’une des souches du virus, tandis qu’une population bien immunisée en sera protégée.
Pour remédier à ces problèmes touchant la poliomyélite à Madagascar, le Ministère de la Santé et ses partenaires ont élaboré l’année dernière un plan de riposte d’urgence composé d’une série de campagnes. La première était menée dans six régions du nord-ouest en décembre 2014, suivie d’une deuxième campagne nationale en avril 2015. Une troisième campagne est programmée au début du mois d’août et une quatrième est prévue en septembre.
« Nous sommes heureux de collaborer avec le gouvernement malagasy, avec nos partenaires internationaux et avec les acteurs de la société civile pour soutenir ces efforts », a déclaré l’Ambassadeur américain Robert T. Yamate. « Notre objectif commun est de veiller à ce que tous les enfants de Madagascar soient vaccinés », a-t-il ajouté.
Les Etats-Unis ont déjà fourni plus d’un demi-million de dollars pour des activités de surveillance de la poliomyélite en cours. L’injection de cette nouvelle tranche de 2,2 millions de dollars va intensifier les efforts du gouvernement malagasy d’éradiquer la maladie.

United States to give $2.2 million for polio eradication in Madagascar
ANTANANARIVO—The United States government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), will contribute $2.2 million to support the efforts of the government of Madagascar to eradicate polio in the country. Over 4.3 million Malagasy children under the age of five will directly benefit from this support.
In Madagascar, the last wild polio virus case occurred in 1997. Since then, a small number of vaccine-derived polio virus cases have been found in different parts of the country. Unvaccinated children are susceptible to either strain of the virus; a fully immunized population will be protected against both.
To address these concerns regarding polio in Madagascar, the Ministry of Health and its partners developed an emergency response plan last year which consists of a series of immunization campaigns. The first was conducted in six northwestern regions in December 2014, followed by a second nation-wide campaign in April 2015. A third campaign is scheduled for early August, and a fourth one is planned for September.
“We are pleased to be partnering with the government of Madagascar, our international partners, and civil society actors to support these efforts ”, said U.S. Ambassador Robert T. Yamate. “ Our common goal is to ensure that all children in Madagascar are vaccinated ”.
The United States has already provided over half a million dollars to ongoing efforts to polio surveillance activities. The infusion of this new tranche of $2.2 million will significantly enhance the government of Madagascar’s efforts to eradicate the disease.
